Darjeeling Himalayan Rail...

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

Description

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

  • The route depicted here is the 5km or so from Darjeeling to Ghum. The line snakes around the foothills of the Himalayas rising to its highest point at nearly 7,500 feet. Although Darjeeling is the end of the line, Ghum is actually the highest point of the line (in fact the highest station in India). The line was built between 1879 and 1881 and in reality runs from New Jalpaiguri on the plains of East Bengal. Darjeeling itself is in Bengal, but is famous for its Gorkha (the true spelling rather than the anglicised Gurkha) traditions.
  •  What to look for
Starting from Darjeeling, you can see the church of St Columbas on the left and the Hindu Temple of Dhirdham on the right hillside. Also look out for the rickety loco shed on the left. For most of the lines route it follows the Hill Cart Road. The line passes through the streets for some time, before heading into open country for a while. But always with that steep drop on your right, so be careful! After a number of twists and turns you will pass the enormous Buddhist Druk Temple on a tight turn. Not long after this you will arrive at the famous Batasia loop. The loops were used as a means of raising the gradient in a short space. Further down the line zig zags were used to also do this.
  • Take this loop carefully or you will derail the train. Passing over the line you just went under you carry on uphill towards Ghum. As you head through the hotels and shops of Ghum you pass the very small Hindu Temple on your left and then the bridge to the Ghum Monastery on the right. You eventually arrive at Ghum station and can see the museum area of overgrown track on your right. The line eventually carries on downhill to Sonada, Tung and Kurseong. Which for the moment are hidden behind a Spawning point.
  • Installing the route
You need the install the DHR Route rwp and my DHR Assets rwp. You should also have the UKTS Freeware Pack of Foliage. The absence of this shouldn’t break anything – you will just have some missing bushes and flowers. Hopefully nothing else is required for the route apart from default Kuju assets. I wanted to create a route that didn’t need loads of extra assets downloaded or any payware at all. However, it does mean my assets pack is a large download. You do, of course also need my DHR Stock Pack for scenarios to work.
  • For Scenario writers
I have provided a few Free Roam scenarios to see the line in different weather and at night. I have also created two very simple Standard Scenarios. I am no Scenario writer so these are nothing special and I hope other people will do much better than this. I have placed markers at most strategic points, including two sidings at Westpoint (Druk) and Batasia. The real line has no signals, but I have placed colour light signals under the ground at the track approaches at each station for the purposes of scenario writing. Note also that the DHR locos are set with handbrake on as a default. So you must use / to release the handbrake. This line involves sharp turns and steepish gradients. Drive too fast and you will de-rail or worse, go over the cliff edge. Go too slow and you will struggle to get uphill. As an extra ‘feature’ the 4 DHR locos each have different derailment tolerance. Two will be fairly stable, no matter how you drive, but the other two will fly off the track if you are too fast. I’ll leave you to find out which is which!
